Culture & Society
Many people believe deep gnomes to be relatives of the forest gnomes and while there are some similarities between the two races their origins are quite different. Deep gnomes were originally denizens of the elemental plane of earth. They fled that plane during a period of great turmoil many thousands of years ago and have called Vaeria’s deep caverns their home ever since.
Being from a primal plane, the deep gnomes have a kinship to the earth and stone very similar to that of the forest gnomes with their woodland homes. This close connection to another plane serves to protect the deep dwelling gnomes from the corrupting influence of the Shadowfell.
Deep gnomes have a very terrestrial appearance with skin tones that mimic the earth and stone that they call home. They also tend to be slightly bulkier than their forest dwelling counterparts, a result of living and working the heavy stone they love.
